A dental laser can now replace a drill and eliminate the grinding whine and the need for a local anesthetic to repair tooth decay, according to this article. The laser works painlessly by quickly heating and expanding the tooth's water molecules, which expand and push out the decay. "It really seeks out the decay in the tooth and destroys the decay without destroying anything else," said Robert Luther Jr., a dentist in Oakdale, Pa.
