ONC updates Congress on HIT progress, barriers

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT has submitted a progress report on its health IT-related efforts to Congress, citing increased adoption of EHRs by office-based physicians (72%) and non-federal acute care hospitals (85%) as part of the federal meaningful use program. The report also highlighted obstacles to HIT use, including the expense of buying an EHR system, technical support and maintenance costs. The ONC is required to report progress to Congress under the HITECH Act.
