Polymer-coated sponge absorbs oil, resists water

Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Science have produced a water-resistant sponge capable of absorbing oil. The polyurethane sponge, coated with a thin layer of polypyrrole, absorbed 20 times its weight in oil and was reusable, indicating it may be suitable for industrial applications, said chemist Paul L. Edmiston of the College of Wooster in Ohio.
