Popularity of reflective roofs based on "sloppy science"

Pittsburgh is pushing white roofs, but Samir Ibrahim, director of design services for Pennsylvania-based Carlisle Construction Materials explains why that isn't a good idea. Ibrahim says white-membrane roofs can do well and be a good idea in warm climates but aren't great in cooler climates because they can increase the heat needed to warm a building and produce other problems. "Those who initiate mandates without understanding the underlying principles should ultimately be held accountable for their misuse," he argues.
