School improvement follows flexibility at Mass. "innovation" schools

At schools in Berkshire County, Mass., that began participating in the state's Innovation Schools initiative this year, officials are reporting higher morale, better engagement and overall success. Under the program, participating schools are given greater autonomy and flexibility when crafting curriculum, determining budgets and making other decisions. At one school, officials focused on improving its culture, including the development of certain character traits, such as teamwork, engagement and scholarship.
