Schools consider implementation of new rules for snacks

Schools have a year to implement new federal rules for snack foods sold on campus. Compliance monitoring, serving sizes and higher prices for healthier options are a few challenges districts could face under the regulations, according to some Wisconsin school nutrition professionals. Cheryl Peil, past president of the School Nutrition Association of Wisconsin and nutrition director at the Elmbrook School District in Brookfield, says the rules probably will not mean banning foods but will require changes in how snacks are made, such as switching from fried to baked chips.
