Pictures and short videos increasingly are competing with the written word as a way for people to communicate on social platforms, experts say. Tools such as Instagram, Vine and SnapChat encourage people to express themselves and send messages through snapshots, potentially shaking up the way people communicate online. "We're tiptoeing into a potentially very deep and interesting new way of communicating," says journalism professor Mitchell Stephens.
