A telescopic contact lens only 1.17 mm thick may provide a practical answer for people suffering from age-related macular degeneration. The development by researchers at the University of California at San Diego holds the potential to replace more obtrusive and prohibitively expensive solutions. The key to the new lens is the ability to switch magnifications as needed with a special pair of glasses that changes the polarization of incoming light.
