Why Microsoft is changing its software-update strategy

The days of waiting years to update software suites is becoming a memory, especially for Microsoft as it advances its Office 365 cloud-based services strategy. Analysts say it's a necessary move given decreasing PC sales and expanding cloud-services competition from players including Google and Dropbox. "Microsoft understands the competitive threat. Three years is a lifetime in tech these days," says IDC's Melissa Webster. Microsoft has devoted more personnel to its data-analyst team and has been providing updates to Office 365 monthly, and will soon adjust to weekly updates, the company says.
