Arab architecture utilizes modern mashrabiya for design, low maintenance

The intricate wooden window screens, or mashrabiya, in the Arab world are being reinvented and used in Arab architecture for tall buildings to provide sun-shading and passive cooling and lower maintenance cost. This photo gallery shows some of the buildings, including the Breakwater Beacon in Saudi Arabia, a lighthouse of hexagonal precast concrete blocks similar to the traditional mashrabiya screens.
