Group advises against routine pelvic exams for most women

The American College of Physicians has released new guidelines advising against routine pelvic exams for women who are not pregnant and who don't have symptoms of a potential health problem. The group said there is not sufficient evidence that the screening exams benefit most women, but cervical cancer screening should be continued. The guidelines appear in Annals of Internal Medicine.
