Gene deficiency may increase asthma risk from passive smoking

A genetic defect may explain why some children develop asthma from second-hand smoke while others do not, according to a new study. German researchers say they have discovered an enzyme that helps detoxify the effects of passive smoking on the air passages, and a deficiency in the enzyme, called glutathione S transferase, could increase the adverse response to passive or active smoking.
