Schumer calls for creation of federal import czar

Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., is asking that a federal import czar be named to combat growing problems with the quality and safety of goods imported from China, amid criticism of the Bush administration for cutting support to regulatory agencies that carry out inspections. In the past few months, tainted ingredients from China caused the largest pet-food recall in U.S. history, the FDA banned five types of Chinese seafood and more than 24 Chinese-made toothpaste brands, 1.5 million Chinese-made toys were recalled because of lead paint, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is advising a recall of tires made by a Chinese manufacturer.
