Safety officials OK building bridge on aging footings

Plans for the Dulles Metrorail extension in Virginia call for building a bridge on aging footings, which have recently passed safety tests. The Federal Transit Administration mandated the safety tests when the footings were discovered buried 50 feet under I-66. The footings were installed in 1977 for a subway line that was never built. The bridge will move Metrorail over Interstate 66 and on to Dulles International Airport.
