Alcatel-Lucent doubles down on copper with G.fast deployment

French telecom-equipment provider Alcatel-Lucent has announced the successful test of G.fast -- a short-haul DSL-based access technology designed to challenge fiber-to-the-home for last-mile connectivity. The trials, conducted in collaboration with Telekom Austria, relied on noise-canceling technology and additional frequencies to deliver data over 70 meters of high-quality copper at 1.1 Gbps.
