CDC: Fatal prescription drug overdoses rise sharply in women

The rate of prescription drug overdose deaths among U.S. women rose 400% between 1999 and 2010, with almost 48,000 deaths, CDC officials reported. While prescription drug overdose deaths were more common among men, the risk to women is catching up, officials said. "The increase in opioid overdoses and opioid overdose deaths is directly proportional to the increase in prescribing," CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden said.
