CERN eyes OpenStack expansion with pilot hybrid cloud

Research facility CERN openlab is considering expanding its OpenStack system and is launching a one-year pilot hybrid-cloud effort with Rackspace to investigate the establishment of a private cloud. The focus is on boosting CPU capacity to support workloads in private- and public-cloud environments. "There are certain periods of the year where there are peak workload demands, and under those circumstances we find that core resources at CERN are under significant load," CERN's Tim Bell says.
