Fat cells release energy to generate heat, study reveals

According to a study, fat cells can sense a drop in temperature that kickstarts a release of their energy to generate heat, burning calories to keep warm. Researchers say that although the study will not result in the creation of a fat-reducing pill just yet, the findings could be used to develop treatments for obesity and diabetes. "It's a piece of the basic science, adding to an evolving awareness that fat cells have many lives that we never knew about. ... The next question is, how do they do it, and can that ability be manipulated?" said cell biologist Bruce Spiegelman.
