Hospitals, doctors feel effects as ACA pushes payment reform

Hospitals and hospital-based physicians are caught in the middle as the Affordable Care Act pushes a change from fee-for-service to value-based payment systems, where reimbursement is linked to quality and outcomes. Experts say hospitals could have from 6% to 10% of Medicare payments linked to performance metrics -- such as readmissions, preventing infections and patient outcomes -- and that private insurers may follow suit.
