How ASCE's SEI develops engineering standards, including ASCE 7

One of the main tasks of the American Society of Civil Engineers' Structural Engineering Institute involves the development of engineering standards such as ASCE 7, which is "unique in many ways," writes SEI Director Jennifer Goupil. Otherwise known as the Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures, ASCE 7 has become a "consensus standard" and updates are made "within a six-year cycle by a diverse and dedicated committee of volunteers under highly structured, well-established rules that encourage wide participation by all stakeholders," Goupil noted.
