Peanuts can contribute to healthier weight for youth

Mexican-American sixth graders who consumed peanuts at least once a week were less likely to be obese, reveals new USDA data published in Nutrition Research. The children who ate peanuts at least once a week also had lower total blood cholesterol, a significantly lower body mass index and higher vitamin E and magnesium intakes. "Low cost and easily implemented interventions such as increasing peanut consumption may be one way to address health risks in at-risk populations," said researcher Craig Johnson.
