Referral program may boost appropriate, timely use of specialty care

A commentary in the New England Journal of Medicine says an online referral and consultation system linking primary care and specialist physicians resulted in shorter patient wait times for appointments and better care coordination. Researchers said the eReferral tool could also help lower medical spending by eliminating unneeded specialty care.
