States are raising gas taxes as Highway Trust Fund shortfall looms

On Tuesday, Indiana, Maryland and New Hampshire increased their state gas taxes in an effort to stave off Highway Trust Fund shortages expected in August. As lawmakers have yet to reach a consensus on how to fund the pending shortfall, advocates of raising the federal gas tax are saying that an increase of 12 cents over the next two years would close the funding gap.
