CMS proposes elimination of fax exemption for e-prescribing

The CMS is proposing the elimination of an exemption to electronic prescribing rules that allowed providers to send prescriptions via computer-generated faxes. The CMS said it expected users of fax software would gradually sign on to the SCRIPT e-prescribing standards that the CMS adopted in late 2005, but the adoption has not occurred, and the agency feels ending the fax exemption will encourage more movement to standards-based e-prescribing.
