The inner-city Philadelphia fifth- and sixth-graders who Jim Burns taught for 40 years call him a hero who kept them from becoming statistics. "I wasn't supposed to make it. But Mr. Burns had a passion and drive and commitment for us to succeed, and I owe him a great deal," said Marvin Worthy, a student in Burns' 1974 sixth-grade class.
