Experts to look into fresh salsa as cause of salmonella outbreak

The CDC has asked state and local health officials to investigate common ingredients used to make fresh salsa -- including tomatoes, onions and cilantro -- as possible sources of the salmonella outbreak, agency spokesman Glen Nowak announced. Western Growers CEO Tom Nassif said that if tomatoes are eventually cleared as the cause of the outbreak, growers may request financial assistance from Congress.
