Specialty hospitalists help address physician shortage, experts say

Health systems are increasingly employing hospitalists to deal with doctor shortages and growing patient volume, according to a report from The Medicus Firm that found hospitalists represented the second most-placed physician specialty in 2012. Specialty hospitalists can help private practice physicians and hospitals by relieving the burden of emergency department calls and filling workforce gaps in rural areas where recruiting physicians may be difficult, experts say.
