France to begin designing underground radioactive waste disposal site

Engineering firms Assystem, Cegelec and Spretec will design Cigeo, the future underground radioactive waste repository in France. The companies will conduct "high-level studies" followed by "detailed design of the technical procedures for the transfer and storage of waste packages," Assystem said. Andra, a national radioactive waste disposal organization that will manage Cigeo, expects to submit an application to regulators in 2017, with the facility's construction to begin in 2020.
