A device that incorporates a piezoelectric transducer to generate ultrasonic vibrations holds the potential to transform how cutting, drilling and milling is done in manufacturing. The device, developed at Loughborough University in the U.K., softens composite materials at the point where work is being done, thus reducing the force needed to cut and yielding less waste and damage.
