Shale boom shifts ethylene focus from Gulf Coast to the Northeast

Shell will build its next ethylene plant in the Northeast, meaning it wont transport Marcellus Shale ethane to the Gulf Coast for processing. The shale-gas boom could move some business away from the Gulf to satisfy domestic demand. "The amount of ethane in a geography where ethylene derivatives are in strong demand lends itself to the integration of a new petrochemical industry there," said William Young, managing director of consulting firm ChemSpeak.
