3D printing's next step: Functioning multimaterial products

3D printing soon may include the ability to print objects that integrate multiple materials or have electronic or optical capabilities. One project incorporated biological tissue and interwoven electronics, creating an ear designed by computer, and another produced millimeter-scale rechargeable batteries with nanoparticles of lithium titanium oxide and lithium iron phosphate.
