Microsoft scrambles to reach consumer market

Microsoft's decision to kill its youth-focused, social-networking Kin phones within two months of launch -- after selling fewer than 10,000 of the gadgets -- highlights the tech giant's recent string of consumer flops, including Windows Vista and Windows for tablets. Part of the problem may be that more developers are focused on Apple and Android. "Microsoft is totally off the radar of the cool, hip, cutting-edge software developers," said software-development author Tim O'Reilly.
