Analyses look at pressure ulcer prevention methods

Data on preventing pressure ulcers show advanced static support surfaces may be better than standard mattresses in higher-risk patients but evidence for nutritional supplements, repositioning and skin care interventions is limited and has shortcomings, according to two comparative effectiveness analyses in the Annals of Internal Medicine. "Based on our findings, providers and patients need to question the utility of some of our approaches, especially those that are very expensive such as hyperbaric oxygen unless further research shows effectiveness," said researcher Dr. M. E. Beth Smith of Oregon Health & Sciences University.
