Scientists grow human liver in mice using stem cells

Japanese scientists have created tiny human liver buds using three types of induced pluripotent stem cells. When the researchers transplanted the buds into mice, they generated human blood vessels to connect with the host's circulatory system and began to exhibit functions of mature liver cells. The liver buds could eventually be used for organ transplants, but scientists suggest that the cells may also be used to test new drugs for liver toxicity.
