The Strava cycling application permits virtual competition on real roadways. The app uses GPS data to allow cyclists to compete against a virtual field of competitors cycling on the same path. "There has been criticism, too, that it promotes reckless or even deadly riding, and turns a beautiful sport into a computer game," Simon Usborne writes. However, the app's design is to provide camaraderie in a solo sport. "We imagined a 'virtual locker room' where we could share workouts among friends," founder Michael Horvath says.
