Merck, GSK vaccines for teens under some scrutiny

Of nine vaccines that Merck and GlaxoSmithKline plan to bring to market over the next five years, five are geared toward younger patients in their teens, which is sparking some concerns the vaccines could promote sexual activity. The two companies have developed competing vaccines, GSK's Cervarix and Merck's Gardasil, to immunize teenagers against HPV, a leading cause of cervical cancer, and both firms believe they would be best administered to children before they become teenagers.
