N.Y. lawmakers push bill to allow OTC sale of morning-after pill

Lawmakers in New York have approved a bill that would allow the sale of the Plan B emergency contraceptive without a prescription, as has been approved in seven other states, but conservatives are urging Gov. George Pataki not to sign the bill. Some pharmacists, including those belonging to a group called Pharmacists for Life International, have refused to sell the pills, arguing that they cause abortion. The drug's maker, Barr Pharmaceuticals, counters the pills prevent implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus.
