Report: Biotech crops hit 1 billion planted acres in May

Acreage planted with biotech crops grew in 2004 for the ninth consecutive year, increasing by 20%, compared with 15% in 2003, according to the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications. A spokesman for Pioneer Hi-Bred called biotech "one of the greatest advances in the history of agriculture," but some family farmers, organic growers and environmentalists still warn about the hazards of commingling.
