Accounting rules help European banks avoid write-downs

There is increasing concern that Europe's banks are hiding sour loans and assets. However, stress tests being conducted on banks might be successful in uncovering such problems, especially if there is a sovereign default, analysts said. Changes to accounting rules in 2008 have allowed some banks to avoid write-downs on assets.
