EPA proposes emission curbs for power plants in 31 states

The Environmental Protection Agency proposed rules that would require coal-fired power plants in 31 states and Washington, D.C., to reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides starting in 2012. The proposal seeks to reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide by 71% and nitrogen oxide by 52% from 2005 levels by 2014, the EPA said. Utilities are worried about complying by the 2012 deadline, especially if additional technology is required.
