An attempt to hire more minority teachers is stirring controversy in a Michigan school district, as some say the new hiring policy discriminates against white candidates. Under the policy, officials have been instructed to look for clues in applicants' resumes, such as church membership or attending certain colleges, that could mean they are minorities. Some opponents of the policy say that in Michigan it is unlawful to consider race when making public-education hiring decisions.
