Veteran special-education teacher Deborah Domes was among 226 educators laid off by Chicago Public Schools last week. Domes, who holds multiple special-education credentials and has worked since 1975 for the district's home-hospital instruction unit, is one of 13 teachers to be dismissed from the unit for the homebound. Some teachers were given two weeks' notice of the layoffs, but others were given three work days to decide whether to opt for early retirement. "We have to hold the most certificates of anyone in the system and we were told that we had three business days to make a life-altering decision," one teacher said.
