Inspectors find alarming new weaknesses in Big Dig tunnel

Big Dig inspectors have found weaknesses in a 1,500-foot section of the tunnel in Boston's North End; weaknesses even greater than those seen in a section of the tunnel that had a large leak last fall. While Big Dig officials stressed that the tunnel is structurally sound, an engineering firm has been brought in to conduct an independent investigation.
