ASLA promotes green roofs for planet and pocketbook

Green roofs can "transform the wasted real estate and hostile environment of a conventional roof," says Nancy Somerville, CEO of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Somerville says rooftop plantings can reduce stormwater runoff while increasing a building's energy efficiency. Although the initial installation cost may be up to $6 higher than a conventional roof on a per-square-foot basis, those costs are recouped through lower energy bills and a longer-lasting structure, she says.
