Sharpen lawn mower blades according to yard size, grass type

Lawn mower blades need to be sharpened at least twice a year to ensure they do not tear grass blades, writes Rich Guggenheim, an extension agent in Colorado. But they may need to be sharpened more frequently to handle the size of the lawn and the type of grass. Blades for rotary mowers also need to be balanced to prevent equipment damage, Guggenheim notes.
