Study: Race, income may play role in ED opioid Rx decisions

U.S. researchers who examined emergency department data from 2006 to 2009 found that race and income may play a role in prescribing decisions, with white and non-Hispanic patients more likely to be prescribed opioid drugs than black and Hispanic patients. ED doctors were also more likely to prescribe the drugs to patients presenting with pain from higher-income neighborhoods than those from the poorest areas. The findings appear in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
