Study: Reasons why women choose not to stay in engineering careers

Women leave the engineering field because of an unwelcoming workplace, lack of advancement opportunities and a culture that doesn't support a work/life balance, according to a three-year study conducted by Romila Singh, associate professor at the Lubar School of Business at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Nadya Fouad, professor and head of the department of educational psychology at the school. A culture that offers opportunities for advancement and respects and values women is what employers should be working on to make women stay in the field, the researchers say.
