California may move ahead with self-anchored suspension plan for Bay Bridge

Under a deal struck between lawmakers and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, California's Department of Transportation may soon issue a second round of requests for proposals for a component of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge that would be the largest self-anchored suspension span in the world. Legislators were expected to vote to save the SAS design, which Gov. Schwarzenegger had proposed scrapping and replacing with a less expensive extension of a 1.1-mile concrete "Skyway" viaduct.
