Peru's teachers protest competency tests

Striking public school teachers in Peru on Thursday violently protested a plan requiring periodic competency exams after February tests showed half of the country's students are unable to solve basic math and one-third lack reading comprehension. Protesters threw stones, burned tires and blocked roads, but Peruvian Education Minister Jose Antonio Chang said only about 15% of teachers participated.
