Construction, manufacturing lead employment downturn

Manufacturing and construction companies continued to lay off workers at a high pace last month, according to figures from the U.S. Department of Labor. Construction companies trimmed their payrolls by 43,000 workers in June, bringing to nearly half a million the total jobs lost in the construction sector since 2007. Noting ASCE's estimate of $1.6 trillion in needed construction, this article points out that $1 billion in infrastructure investment could create some 47,500 jobs.
